ADHD Assessments

Living with suspected ADHD can make work, relationships, and daily life genuinely hard. Whether that looks like trouble focusing, poor organisation, restlessness, fidgeting or impulsive decisions. If any of this sounds familiar, an assessment might be worth considering.

Jack offers in-person and online ADHD assessments for adults, with bookings available up to three months in advance.

The rate for a comprehensive assessment, including a report, is $1800 (GST included).

GP’s and nurse practitioners with specialist training are now able to assess, diagnose, and prescribe stimulant medication for adults with ADHD.

Key changes taking effect:

  • GPs and NPs with specialist training will be able to conduct assessments and diagnose ADHD in adults

  • GPs and NPs will have the ability to prescribe stimulant medications after diagnosis

  • Overall access to ADHD medication prescriptions should improve

  • Clinical psychologists will continue to offer ADHD assessments to adults in the community

  • For more detailed information, read a blog post written by clinical psychologist, Petra Hoggarth

What is likely to happen:

  • Some GPs will complete training to provide ADHD assessments for their patients. However, given pressures on medical practices and GPs, most will not offer this service.

  • GP’s will be authorised to prescribe stimulant medication for ADHD, even if they do not provide ADHD assessments.

  • A hybrid or collaborative working model.

    • Experienced clinical psychologists will continue to perform thorough ADHD assessments and write comprehensive assessment reports.

    • GPs and NPs will accept diagnoses from clinical psychologists and then handle medication prescribing and monitoring.

Comparing ADHD Assessments: Clinical Psychologist vs GP

  • Clinical psychologists have years of specialist postgraduate training in psychological assessment and diagnosis of conditions like ADHD. This is their core area of expertise.

  • A GP assessment will typically focus on your ADHD symptoms alone. A clinical psychology assessment looks at your full mental health picture, including conditions that overlap with or mimic ADHD, such as anxiety, depression, and trauma. It also looks at how ADHD has affected you throughout your life.

  • A clinical psychologist will provide you with a comprehensive written report, which you can then share with other health professionals or refer back to.

  • Many people choose a clinical psychologist for their ADHD assessment, over a GP, as they value the more thorough assessment process.

Recommendation for clients making a booking from for an ADHD assessment:

  • Prior to booking an ADHD assessment with a clinical psychologist, it is recommended that you first reach out to your medical practice and clarify whether your GP or NP will be able to prescribe stimulant medication if you receive a diagnosis of ADHD. Most medical practices will accept a diagnosis of ADHD from a clinical psychologist and be willing to prescribe medication.

  • If your GP cannot prescribe ADHD medication, Jack can refer you to a health professional that will be able to prescribe you medication.
